NIGERCON 2013 Conference Highlights - DAY 1

The 2013 IEEE NIGERCON conference started with an early morning workout by a total of thirty (30) students from University of Ibadan, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Akanibiam Polytechnic.

This was followed by a talk on the way forward in the Students' Activities Section in Nigeria by Engr. John Funso-Adebayo on how the students can network during the NIGERCON 2013 conference as well as how they can add value to their schoolwork through papers presentations, and becoming interdependent. Engr. Funso cited conferences such as the Region 8 conferences, the GYMN 2007 and the INSAC as key examples. He also advised them to submit reports of their Student Branch activities immediately and prepare for training on VTOOLS, Google Apps, and Microsoft Apps the during course of the conference. This training will be facilitated by fellow students on Friday at a dinner program.

NIGERCON 2013 opening ceremony commenced at 11am, with a prayer by the representative of the Director General, Imo State Broadcasting Service, Owerri.
The President, Nigerian Society of Engineers and Chairman of Council was ably represented by Engr. G. Massari, FNSE.
A welcome Address was delivered by the IEEE Nigeria Section Chair, Prof. Gloria Chukwudebe after which the conference was declared open by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Technology, well represented by Engr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Ogwujiafor.

The 1st Paper (National Information Systems and Network Security Standards) was delivered by Mr. Inye Kemabonta, Director of Standards and Regulation, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). This was followed by the paper presentation on Electricity Market Development in Nigeria by Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, represented by Mr. Uche Okoro.
Mr. Isodjie A.A., the MD/CEO of Netportal Ltd then presented the paper on The Use of Social Media for Business Promotion, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe presented the paper on The Future of Computing and Evolutions of Neuromorphs while Engr. Adoye who represented the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) presented the paper on Development of Engineering Standards and Regulation in Nigeria.

The paper presentations were followed by a Corporate/Individual Awards section by the representative of the executive governor of Imo State, The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

The conference then observed a breakout sessions and reconvened for the three Technical sessions which ran concurrently. Please visit Programme at a glance for details of the program of activity for day 1.
